Violence Prevention Training Programs at our Facility

The Five Fingers of Self-Defense:  Individual and Community Responses to Violence
(12 hours in 4 sessions)

Students learn the Five Fingers of Self-Defense and practice applying these strategies to a variety of situations. In role plays, group discussions and physical practice, you gain confidence as you learn concrete ways to respond to conflict and violence. You will learn to:

THINK  mental strategies such as awareness, strategic thinking, and recognizing systemic violence
YELL communication strategies such as assertive body language, verbal boundary setting, and de-escalation
RUN  strategic positioning and when to avoid, when to engage
FIGHT  effective physical techniques to use when other things haven’t worked
TELL  healing strategies for survivors and alliance building for individuals/communities

Topics include dealing with harassment and hate-based violence, recognizing the impact of our socialization, and self-calming strategies to reduce our own violent responses. Other skills include facing an armed assailant, releases from grabs and holds, and intervening safely in violence directed at others. Taught from a perspective that emphasizes choosing the most peaceful response to violence, this popular Thousand Waves program is fun, empowering, effective, and community-building.
