Thousand Waves offers Seido karate classes seven days a week, providing professional instruction to students of all levels, from beginners to advanced black belts. Classes address all elements of fitness—flexibility, coordination, strength, balance and cardio vascular endurance, while teaching Seido karate in a step-by-step, skill-building fashion.

To facilitate mindfulness and gratitude, we begin classes with a Japanese ritual —a brief seated meditation and a series of bows to each other and our teachers, followed by a ten minute warm-up of the joints and major muscles groups. Basic technique is taught with great care, assuring healthy body mechanics and safe practice.

Belt-Level Classes

The class schedule is carefully designed to promote learning and community.

We welcome beginners to join our Center any time and offer a free trial class for the student to “try the real thing.”  White belt (beginner) classes are small, supportive and allow for personal interaction with instructors.

To facilitate growth and development, separate technique classes concentrate on teaching rank level curriculum:

  • blue-advanced yellow belt classes (advanced beginner to intermediate)
  • green to black belts classes (intermediate to advanced)
  • black belt classes (advanced)

To foster community and skill sharing, we offer multi-level classes (advanced white to black belts) where the energy is high and senior students mentor junior students, supervised by the classroom teacher.

Special Classes

As students learn and progress through the ranks, special classes teach various aspects of the curriculum:

Sparring Skills and Free Sparring classes focus on this sportive, interactive partner work, teaching footwork, strategy, technique combinations and all the components of sparring in a fun and safe learning environment.

Kata class provides depth and detail to the choreographed “martial dances” of karate. Students enjoy the high workout level, refining technique and deepening their understanding of the application and meaning of the forms.

Fitness classes are designed to increase fitness— balance, core strength, limb strength, power, coordination and endurance.

Conditioning class utilizes classic martial arts training exercises—jumping rope, heavy bag training, weight lifting, abdominal strength work and more. It’s a well rounded physical conditioning class, refined to appropriately challenge each student and improve their martial arts technique.
